Default W12???

i know what V4,V6,etc mean and i kno what an inline 4 and inline 6 mean but what does a W12 mean i was watching one of those car shows the have on espn2 and it said that some car had a W12 now what exactly does that mean.

correct me if im wrong but its a V12 engine that Volkswagen came out with that has each bank of cylinders staggered to save space

look at the one on the right and imagine it with 6 cylinders instead of 4

Why isnt that configuration used more often? I have never heard of it before myself. Is it less efficient or something?
