Default Battery & Thermostat - when to replace?

98 Dodge Ram 4x4 - 65,000miles

My battery is orginal, but it's working fine. However, the negative cable seems to be corroding a little more often. The temperture is fine too, but the thermostat is also orginal.

I'm just wonder if I should replace these items as rotine maintenace, or at least wait until they show some sign of failure (hard starts or higher temperture)? The battery is like $80.00, so that's a little expensive for something that's not bad yet!

Oh, one more question. The battery is expensive because it's heavy duty with reserve amps. Do I really need a battery with reserve amps?
