My Caravan tried starting itself!? Haunted?

My wife's van has been acting up when trying to start. Sometimes it will click like a dead battery, sometimes it will lag like a weak battery, sometimes it starts like a new battery. All with a different turn of the key within 30 seconds.
Today was just plain creepy. The van was parked, turned off, had no occupants, and the key was in my pocket. I heard the starter and turned to find my wife not in the driver's seat but standing 30 feet away. I opened the door while the starter was spinning, inserted the key in the ignition and turned it to the start position and the engine roared to life. Turned the key off and the engine stopped running but the starter kept spinning it. Turned the key back to start and the engine purred back to life. This time when I turned the key off the engine and starter both stopped.
Where do I start to look for a solution? My Haynes manual doesn't have a section for poltergeists.
