Breathin Easy (Intake & Exhaust)
I'm looking to help my new toy breath easier. I have a 2004 Ram 1500 5.7 Liter HEMI and I want to throw a CAI and exhaust on it. Looking for suggestions on brands and types. Numbers are appreciated as well. I have a mind to go true dual from the cats (flowmasters) and throw on a K&N CAI with metal piping. What sort of stuff should I take into consideration? Let me know what you think!
I See you're new to DF. Welcome aboard.
I can't recommend a specific CAI for the Hemi, but I can tell you what you need to look for in one. Not all Intakes will give you the same results.
You want to find an intake that takes in the coldest air. If you look at some of these that have a little divider type thing but the filter and all is still inside the engine bay, it's not getting the coolest air. Even if it is sealing against the hood or what appears to be the inner fender. The coolest air will come from in front of the truck. I adapted the stock box to pick-up air below the radiator. There was a noticable difference from the stock pick-up under the hood.
Don't buy an intake that has a tubing inside diameter of less than 3 3/8 inches. This is the smallest opening in the stock intake and regardless of how smooth or shiney the tubing is, if it's smaller it's not an improvement. The flex tube may neck down to around this size when air is flowing through it. I've read that some have seen an increase by going to a smooth interior, plastic material tube in place of the flex tube.
Good luck with your choices.

I have a 2003 Ram 1500 Hemi and this is the intake I am about to order. I like how it is a closed box and then if you get the extension tube it is pulling air from the front under the bumper. That would gather the coldest air possible.

NOt at all, the volant trys to work like a ram air where the air tube is placed where a fog lamp would go and the air is pushed through the tube at speed where as the K&N unit still sucks the air in but with less restriction.
Save your $$$$$ just get a cat back exhaust...Now i dont have a hemi but when i had the CAI on it just made noise.. and look at the filter from KN airaid any or these performance filters .....you see day light thru it little pin holes is the oil they put on these filters are so special that the dirt or what not gonna avoid these pin holes ?
