When I put my Edelbrock shorties on I also changed out the OEM cat and put a catco cat on. I noticed a good increase from doing this to my truck. I have a 98 4x4 with the 5.9. I also noticed a little different sound coming from the exhaust as well. Not as dramatic as my 82 chevy sounds but really good. Some of my other mods include: MSD 6A ignition, Taylor 8mm wires, K&N FIPK 2 air cleaner, and a Hypertech power programmer.

Mopar Performance Stainless Headers. Installed them after the top end rebuild w/camshaft. Noticed moderate low end power, not much top end.
