1st roadtrip mpg info
I took my Rubicon out to Pennsylvania yesterday for a snowboarding trip. Conditions driving out there were horrible. I primarily took the major freeways going out there but was restricted to 55-60 mph due to the slippery roads and low visibility. Once I got off the main roads, I was on narrow, hilly, snow covered mountain roads. Living at the Jersey Shore, I'm not really used to snow covered roads so I went rather slowly. I stayed in 3rd and 4th gear and kept the rpms at or above 2000 to ensure that I'd have enough available power to get up the hills. I did this for about 20 miles. The ride back was much better. The snow had melted and I was able to maintain a respectable 40-45 mph in 6th gear on the mountain roads. I did however miss one of my turns so I was forced to take hw18 and rt9 for much of the trip. These roads have a 50-55mph limit and have many traffic lights. I was driving my 2005 Rubicon 6 speed with 33x12.5" tires with some additional weight adding accessories that probably hindered my economy. Nevertheless, I was able to get 14.19 mpg over the course of ~230 miles with it. I don't think thats terribly bad for something with 33s especially considering the roads I drove on. Just to put that into perspective, with my Ram 1500 4.7L, my highway mpg has ranged from 14.5-18 depending on what modifications I had on it at the time and the speed I drove at. Also, just to have it on record, on my return trip when the roads were better, I did drive a short distance on a major interstate. Max cruising speed for the Rubi is a little over 70mph. When the speedo was at 70 I was running at around 2625 rpm. I dont think sustained driving at 2750+ would have been good for the engine. My speedo however runs a little slowly due to the tires so it was probably more like 72-75 range. I know that this section is rather unpopulated but hopefully someone will get something out of it.
Hell, there ought to be enough of us, one of the Jeep sites I'm on has so many posts a day, it makes our 3rd Gen Ram section look like a ghost town. I'm sure we could get some traffic here if there was a bit of interest...
