The ZJ & WJ Jeep Dana 44 is the only Dana 44 with an aluminum differential housing. It is also a C-clip axle with one piece shafts and a 5 on 4.5" wheel bolt pattern. Because of the aluminum housing and C-clips, it is not really any more desirable than a Dana 35c.

 

My Jeep has an aluminum axle:

It is a Dana 60, from Currie Enterprises, and has held up well to some substantial abuse.

I had the aluminum Dana 44 in a Grand Cherokee as well, and it was the only rear axle in a Jeep that I've managed to break. I broke a spider gear on the Cliff Hanger trail, in Moab. Is Jeep still using the aluminum Dana 44 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee? Its too bad that Jeep didn't offer a better axle in the ZJ and WJ, they had the Dana 35, which was very marginal in strength, and the aluminum Dana 44, which wasn't much better.
