Default 95' Grand Cherokee full time 4x4, front diff. binding

Hello, after doing some google searching I found this site and found some very informative posts. Unfortunately this contradicts my plans to fix my binding front differential.

The truck see's plenty of 4x4 use on the beach and during snow. I would like to find a 2 door cherokee to put a 350 in, but for right now I need to maintain this grand cherokee to get me and my fishing pole on the beach.

So anyway, my plans were to rebuild the front differential. But it seems it could be my transfer case at fault? Removing the front driveshaft solves the issue, but obviously that's not a solution.

Thanks, this seems like a knowledgeable forum... Not that I need another forum to spend ours reading on.

put the driveshaft back in! like, right now.
your problem is teh VC (viscous coupling) in the tcase. happens on AWD jeeps. it stops working and locks the jeep in 4x4 essentially. thats the binding you feel. when you take out the driveshaft the tcase the thinks there is full slippage up front and will send power to that output and this WILL destroy your transfer case.

do a goodle search on 249 to a 242 transfercase swap.

Thanks, the driveshaft is in. I only took it out to try and diagnose the problem.

I'm searching for a 242 case to swap in. Thanks for the reply.

no worries. any 242 will work. you just have to swap parts. take the input out of your 249 transfercase (google this swap and you'll know what i'm talking about) and swap it into the 242.
done. its actually fairly straight forward.

Since the VC is already shot, no further damage will become of the transfer case. Unless you need 4wd, leave the front drive shaft out to avoid damage to the rest of the drive train.

Keep in mind however that the Jeep will roll while in park without the front drive shaft, so remember to set the E brake.

Follow this link, I have compiled all the info you need to swap to a 242:

Thanks for the reply, I've read your swap thread before. Looks good.

I need to leave my driveshaft in, the truck is on the beach almost everyday. I have a 231 coming from a 1997 GC, might be on the floor today.

Yesterday was fun, I changed both rear axle bearings, seals, pinion seal, along with new brake rotors, pads and e-brake shoes. So hopefully that rear axle will stop spitting grease everywhere now.
