Default both stabilizer bar links failed. Said to be common??

1995, Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 6cy 242, 88,000 miles. Wife’s car and condition is superb. Jeep mostly driven to work in city (130,00 pop) on good streets, averaging about a 5-6 miles round trip. Driven on road but never off road.

She advised she had been hearing a “clunking” sound at front of Jeep when she pulled out of drive and would hit bumps. Upon checking, I found that the threaded post of both stabilizer bar links had rusted and had snapped off??? I asked the parts fellow at the Jeep dealer if this problem seemed to be common. He said it was.

Whoa! Critical suspension component commonly rusts and snap off....on vehicle driven in town and having 88,000 miles....and it must be considered that the links started deteriorating at much lower mileage!!?

Though said to be common, is this acceptable for a critical suspension component? [:'(]

This is actually a problem on most 4X4's. They really aren't very expensive...something like less than $20 for the pair and they are really easy to replace. The problem is that they are made of steel and start rusting as soon as the vehicle leaves the factory. Mine seemed to break when I hit a speedbump too fast at a funny angle. Anyway....don't make the mistake and only replace one of them...you will be soon replacing the other. You can buy some aftermarket ones that are heavier too and will last longer....but they're something like $65 to $75 a pair. The last pair I bought came from NAPA 4 years ago and are still hanging on.

Hope this helps!

Brian

WOW, a pair for $20.00, I just put one on my sons and had to give $45.00, that would be $90.00 a pair and this is the second one on a 2 wd. Guess I went to the wrong place. Thought it would be a factory item!
