A V-8 in the newer Wranglers just seems a little like overkill. Maybe a 4.7L would fit, but I don't much like that engine. From what I've seen, it looks difficult to work on. The 5.7 Hemi would probably transform the frame into a pretzel. Again, from what I've been able to find, the axles are Dana 44's with Lockers from the factory and the engine is the tried and true 4.0L I-6. The only weakness I can see is the transfer case. Chain driven. One would think they would have developed a newer Gear driven transfer case. Other than that, I like the rig, but it's going to be difficult to move from my 98 Ram to a Wrangler. We'll see.
A V8 in a Wrangler IS overkill. But, I believe the idea was if it doesn't have a V8 like the "real" Golden Eagle CJ, it isn't really a Golden Eagle. Maybe. Real four wheelers use gear not gas anyway. As far as the 4.7 or 5.7 fitting in a Wrangler, it isn't a problem at all. Been done looooots a times by aftermarket suppliers. That frame isn't bending under any gas motor either. A twin turbo cummins maybe, but definitely not any of the current generation DC gas motors. Just a point that might interest you. The transfer case in the Wrangler is the NV231. The case in your Ram is a 231HD. The max. continous input torque rating is IDENTICAL at 730 lb/ft. Even the much-ado-about-
nothing "HEMI" isn't making anywhere close to enough to hurt that. The only real difference is the 231HD has a wider chain and larger bearings. The Rubicons get a 241R which is the 3/4 and 1 ton case. THAT'S a heavy duty case. Either way they're all chain driven and pretty damn bullet proof as long as they get maintained correctly. If you insist on a gear driven case you have to hunt up an early NP205 or 203 from a GM or Ferd Pick-up. Good cases but the gearing sucks out loud and they're a PITA to regear. Not to mention the expense. You're better off with a NV231 or 241 for most apps. OR if you're that worried about grenading your case scrap all the factory stuff and get an Atlas II. Best transfer case made. Bar none.
