Looking for info on an '86 Cherokee XJ
Hi all,
I just picked up (for free
) an '86 Jeep Pioneer (that's a Cherokee XJ with a trim package, giving it the name Pioneer, correct?) with the V6 2.8L, auto. The owner put 215k miles on it and finally got tired of chasing it around fixing it. She said she put about $3000 into it over the last year or so and just grew too frustrated (icluding a new transfer case). The reason they finally gave up is because it has recently started smoking. I started it up, and yeah, sure enough, it smokes on both sides by the headers (probably just a good oil leak from the covers), but, when I took off the intake cleaner, I saw that the rebreather tube was really smoking it up. I'm guessing valve guides and/or rings. Well, at 215k miles, it's time for a rebuild/replace any way you look at it. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some information
1) What engines fit in the '86 XJ? I've read where some people say the '93 Camero fits it. Is that true of all the '93 engines (exluding the V8's)? What other models/years fit?
2) Will the '87/'88 I6 fit in there? (engine compartment looks kind of small for an in-line 6 or V8).
I'm looking to do as little "extra" work as possible. I realize some may be needed, but I'd like to avoid things like completly rewiring it, welding, etc. A little bit is ok, but if I have build it from the ground up, I'm done
. This will be a daily driver, not a toy (though, that may change later
). I cant' go overboard with the cost on this. I JUST got through rebuilding my wifes' '98 Neon and she's still grumpy about that (any of you from Neons.org should know me *lol*) Basically, I'm looking for something with a little oomph when I need it, but dont' need to hot rod it either. Thanks for any info, resources, product companies, etc. any one can get to me.

The 87-88 4.0 is going to be a huge disappointment if you go through all the work to put it in.
You know what I would do from the other post......SBC!!!!!

Sorry for dragging up all these old posts, I never noticed there was a Jeep forum on here. I frequent many Jeep fourms and know WAAY too much about Jeeps, lol.
