TC Problems
Ok, first, what I'm working with:
'86 2dr Jeep Cherokee (Pioneer) with Selec-Trac (vacuum switch on the consol to switch between 2WD and 4WD), 3spd Auto (904?), 2.8L
Ok, first question. I finally got the trasnfer case some what working again. When I stop, put the auto in nuetral, switch from 4H to N or 4L, all's good. I can drop the auto in drive or reverse (wow, what a jolt when it engages *lol*). Now, when I stop, put the tranny back in neutral, then go from 4L to N, then try and go back into 4H or 4L, it grinds. I have to actually slam it quickly into either 4H or 4L. That can't be good for the transfer case. This isn't normal, correct?
Second question.
The inital problem was that I couldn't get it to switch into 4WD at all. I would flip the switch, but it would never engage. Turns out, the problem was the vaccum pot(motor) was slightly bent, so the rod couldn't move. Well, I went ahead and actually took the pot completly apart (wasn't easy), fixed the rod as best I could, and put it back together. Problem is, I couldnt' get a good enough seal, so it's kind of hit or miss if it can pull/push enough to engage/disengage the TC. I'm going to have to actually replace it. My local yard only has Jeeps that are all manually run. Would a dealership still have these parts you think? Or, does anyone know who sells replacement parts for a jeep this old? Or, if it turns out I would just be better off ditching that TC, can I use any TC and have it bolt right back up, or am I limited in what I can put in there? I really would rather not repalce it, but I'll do what I have to do.
Sorry this is so long winded. Thanks for any help anyone can give
