Default 87 Cherokee problems

1987 jeep cherokee 4wd automatic w/ 4.0L. the vehicle is fairly new to me but im finding a few problems. the first is w/ the tranny, is seems to slip when driving,as well as not wanting to shift until about 3500-4500 rpm (under light-average driving) which seems high to me. the jeep does have a selector switch on it for the tranny (power and comfort) but it didnt seem to do anything (anyone know more about the switch), also the rpm's seem to idle around 400 (steady) and the same in drive when stopped or coasting. any info on the above problems would be greatly appreciated.

I took it to the mechanic and he replaced the TPS sensor, it seemed to work so far, idle seems a bit better and its shifting better.

I also have an 89 but I do have the comfort switch (I believe it only came with the Laredo package). The switch just changes how aggressively the vehicle rides. With power selected, it only takes a bit of throttle push for the vehicle to down shift and accelerate. With comfort selected, you will find you need to really put the pedal to the metal to make it get up and go!

yes, i have owned a jeep or two, and i do believe the switch comes with the laredo but i could be wrong...i had an 89 cherokee that had numerous problems and seemed to be a constant money pit which is why i bought my ram.
