i have a 89 shadow with a bad 3 speed trans. what would be the cheaper and easyer way of fixing it. should i rebuild it or put a new one (or junk yard parts) in. it shutters when i take off then starts slipping. i changed the oil and filter it helped for a short time then did the same thing. someone told me some times the band needs to be tighten is that true? i thought when start slipping there junk.

 

Your trans can be tweaked some, although it might not fix your problem. Its definitelyworth trying to adjust the bands though (a lot less expensive than another trans). Here are 3 links for you:

thanks. but i have not been able to try because i been spending time on my car. the 89 is my girls car i got for her cause it was a good deal. when i do it ill tell you if it works thanks again
