1994 Spirit 2.5
I'm picking up that car for my girlfriend this coming weekend. It's going to need a little engine restoration, though not much as the thing still runs like a champ. Here's the resto. list:
-Clean carbeurator and intake manifold
-Coolant flush
-Oil change
-SeaFoam
-Tires
-Brakes: New rotors, pads, fluid (possible brake booster? More below.)
-Air filter
-Transmission flush add Synchromesh
Basically just the run-of-the-mill maintenance on the engine.
Now, I hear (and know from experience), that Chrysler isn't the best at making transmissions, engines yes, transmissions no. So, my first question to start out with is this: Would it be wise to be adding a higher grade than normal auto. transmission fluid and Synchromesh? or should I just run OE fluid? What are some of the least obvious symptoms of these transmissions going out? I know the whole trans. slipping, not shifting gears etc. and it seems fine.
Secondly, the brakes are bad, terrible. Rotors and pads are shot, and I'm guessing a brake bleed wouldn't be such a bad thing to do while I'm doing the brakes. Now, I've never come across a brake problem like this, where they squish terribly. Nearly to the floor. I'm guessing there's some air in the system, but what does a going-out brake booster feel like? I believe that if the fluid is completely changed, the rotors and pads are new and it's still squishing that it's the brake booster.
Thirdly, and this is just for fun, any sites which are strictly Spirit or 2.5 carb/FI related? I've been searching to try and find an intake for the car, direct-fit aftermarket exhaust system, and so on, but there doesn't seem to be anything. If at all, I'll just fabricate the intake so on and so forth. Just out or curiosity.
And on the last question; what are somethings that should be watched out for with the Spirit engine besides normal wear and tear? Any gremlins?

Your spirit has a trottle body not a carb. Squishy peddle could be a broken brake line or air in the system. When a booster goes bad the peddle should hard like if the car isn't running or cause a vac. leak on the engine. If the master went bad it could cause a weird pedal. As for the trans it should be pretty strong last awhile if don't abuse it like trying to do burnouts are lots of wheel spin. Modify version of that trans have propeled turbo engine into the 8s in the quarter.
