91 Shadow..Oil all over..
We were taking my 91 shadow to my dads when it stalled out, this is a common problem with it seeings the head gasket is going out. I put about 2.5 quarts of oil before it showed on the dipstick. Figuring it just burned the oil we decided to continue driving it to my dads. We were going about 35-40 driving down the shoulder of the road (i was in front in my 93 and my friend was behind the 91 shadow). We got about a mile away from my dads when the motor started to really blow alot of smoke from under the hood. I decided after this to just push it with my car the rest of the way. When we got to my dads I opened up the hood, and to my surprise the entire engine was coated with oil, including the inside of the airbox and the throttle body. My dad might actually be right now (im afraid) that the rings might be blown or a bad piston, Im hoping its just a blown head gasket; but was wondering if anyone else on the forum has had a similar problem and what the fix was. The tear-down will begin tomorrow afternoon when my dad gets out of work. If its really bad I might just drop a used motor in it. Any help/suggestions will be extremely greatly appreciated.
You got that right, got the head off and it wasnt a pretty sight. Cylinder #3 has been dead since before we got the car, it had no top piston ring and a good size hole burned into it. The head was pretty nasty above cyl #3 and a bit above #4 so I called a local junkyard I get most my stuff from and picked up a head for 25 dollars, Its really clean and looks like it was re-manufactured shortly before the car got hit in the rear end. (guessing the insurance co. totalled it due to airbag deployment or somethin) Anyhow piston, new rod bearings and main bearings, along with rings are on order and SHOULD be in monday morning. Total cost for parts from advance auto: $145, Head $25, 6 qaurts of oil, oil filter, and a gallon of antifreeze (from meijers): about 20 bux (got 15% discount cuz Kim {my fiance} works there). Final cost (so far...) roughly 200 dollars. Hoping to have the car back on the road by next weekend, shouldnt take as much work knowing what needs to be done now. Just really sucks that I was told by many places/people that it was a head gasket and I had a vented piston lol...heres the pix.
