Default Automatic to Manual transmission conversion and carbuerator to fuel injection.

My buddy has a 1982 Dodge Rampage half ton truck. It has a 3 speed automatic (no overdrive) transmission. He gets good gas mileage around 25 to 30 mpg US. We would like to replace the transmission with a 4 or 5 speed Manual and make it fuel injected (if possible) for more power and gas mileage. I've heard fuel injection is not as expensive with an 80s and older car because theres a lot less computer stuff to deal with. Although i have also read not to do it because it's a pain to tune it. The big thing we want to do is put a rebuilt or old 4 speed or 5 speed dodge transmission in it. Please let me know what we would need and whats worth replacing and whats not.

2.2 litre? just swap an aries or somethin... 2.2 fuel injecteds are everywhere still. Prolly have to swap tranny with a laser or charger 2.2 I'd imagine. I dont think tuning would be an issue at all with the ecu swap. Harnesses should be interchangable so just get the parts from a donor car and you shouldnt have much trouble. The harnesses might be the only issue you have year to year. Never changed one out in a K-car but year to year in mercedes was different. (only harness I've ever changed out)

this should be posted in a diff forum.

You have me cringing at that thought, the Rampage is a rather rare ride, keeping it original with make it worth more money. If you still want to do the swap I think they shared the same platform as the Daytona/Laser, though the computer could come from a K, you will need to find a donor car, you will need the mounts, wiring and computer. I know somebody who has an 84 Daytona turbo in his garage it hasn't been on the road in close to 25 years the body is rather clean, it has just over 100k on the clock. I think for the right price he would sell it.
On a side note this should be moved to my section for the K's.

done this many times including in my race car. the BEST thing to do is get a 1988-1990 Omni/Horizon with manual trans. it will have fuel injection, ALL parts needed to convert and everything will fit. He'll see again of 5-10 mpg doing this. Most guys get all kinds of crazy with these trucks doing a turbo conversion etc. sounds like for simplicity on this job, a tbi injection system will provide more power, more reliability and better gas mileage.
