Default 93 Shadow temp and idle issues

got a 93 shadow es with 2.5l engine (auto) and got two issues of late with it...firstly, for some reason the temp rises to the line closer hot then down....no different in driving on level roads or hills....but if i turn on the heat it goes down quickly or stays at the first line closer to cold. What could this be?
Secondly, idle is usually around 7-900 but of late its been sitting below 500 at idle (ie traffic lights, rush hour crawl), it doesn't sputter or try to stall (never stalled on me, got it in may 05) and today it got down below 300 rpm but no problems, oil is fine, leaks a tiny bit but nothing major, any suggestions would be appreciated

Thx

Idle sounds about normal, my 93 with the 2.5 idles at about 5-800 and our 91 ES with the 2.5 idles 300-600 so dont worry about that. As for the temp issue, it could be a bad gauge, or possibly a bad thermostat. My 91 (before the motor blew) did the same thing temp wise but never overheated...so its hard to say on that (2 diff t-stats did the same thing so i was to the conclusion it was the gauge). If your really worried about temp buy/borrow a decent multi-meter or something that can show you the temp and compare that to what it should be at.

thanx bassboy, i will try a new t-stat this week. I am glad to hear it can idle that low as well, had me worried, i'm always wondering if i'm gonna stall or not, but never get any engine hesitation. Is there anything else i should look at while doing the thermostat?

On a different note, saw u picked up a convertable shadow...just in time for summer...nice.[sm=smiley20.gif] any pics?

There should be 2 - coolant temp sensors. the 2 wire on the t-stat houseing, witch is for the ECU to monitor engine temp. the other temp sensor is a 1-wire witch is in the front of the head by #2 cylinder. this one is for your temp gage only. they go bad and will make the gage swing all over the place.
