Default 89 Dynasty transmission problems

I have a Dynasty with a 3.0L V6. It is having some transmission issues (from looking around that's very common), so if there is a previous post I missed, please tell me. Recently I replaced the trannie fluid and filter, hoping it would fix the switching problem, didn't work. The problem is it has a hard time shifting at the following times: Going from park or reverse to drive or overdrive. and while downshifting while in overdrive. It always goes to 2nd gear when this problem happens. This problem also doesn't happen all of the time, but as time goes on, it is becoming more common. The only way to get it out of second gear is to restart the car.

I have found a fix to the downshifting problem. If i'm in regular drive, it doesn't seem to have to shifting problem. (maybe because the shifting points are at specific speeds) If i use this stratagy, the only problem is getting to drive from park/reverse, it still can fail.

One more thing i noticed while I was troubleshooting a little. If i get it up to 3rd gear in drive, and switch it to overdrive, it will go to 4th. When I come to a stop, I switch it back to drive while still moving at a decent speed, usually this works, but sometimes it will fail and go to 2nd gear... Also, i've noticed overdrive only fails on the downshift, usually when trying to downshift to 2nd or 1st.

If anyone has tips/questions as to other symptoms, let me know. I'm really not liking driving around in 3rd gear all of the time, with the gas prices.

Thanks a lot

Sounds like you have the A604 and its acting up.

What fluid did you use?

Personally I'd go grab a 3speed automatic out of a junk yard and throw that in there on your 3.0, as those trannies are indestructiable. The A604 (overdrive tranny) is fairly weak and unreliable.

I would go so far as to say that all of chrysler's bad reputation problems in the 90s- came out of the A604 and the peeling paint problems the big 3 had with some colors in this era, but thats just my personal theory.
