Default Shadow Rusting HELP !

first of just saying high, I've got a 1994 dodge shadow 2.2 5 speed base model (not even a rear defroster) and I have some rust concerns.

the Rear hatch as I have just recently discovered is pretty much shot. the bottom lip where the outer skin folds down and around the inner sheet metal has extensive rusting that I tried in vain to sand/grind off and it just keeps comming back. i ground it down to shiny and then noticed it was rusting behind that [sm=boohoo.gif] so its rotting from the inside out. Is this common on shadows to rot out on the hatch. and how much do you think a rust free hatch would cost at a Junkyard if I could find one ??

second rust spot.

on the pass side rear wheel well on the in the seam between the inner and outer pieces of sheet metal it too has rusting going on. I am trying to stop that but I somewhat fear that that is probolily to far gone. I am looking for ANY reasonable Ideas on how to stop the rusting from continuing. dremel the outer piece off and stop the rust and repaint or what.

the car is currently at 209,xxx miles and I would like it to go until atleast 300,000

Best bet is do nothing. I guess you don't know or have access to the right tools to do the job. The hatch is the easiest to fix since it just replace the unit the rust on the quarter panel requires alot more work. To do it right you would have cut out the area where the rust is. You then would have make a patch panel or replace the entire quarter panel. I quessing your state has inspection that doesn't allow rusty cars?

To answer the question yes those are the common spots.

You should check under the car too, the spot where the parking brake cable comes out and under the pedals are common points for rust to start forming.

As for the rust spots the best thing to do is to:
cut out the rust spots
grind/sand at least 2 inches around each rust spot (to make sure it hasn't gone further)
use a panel adhesive to glue in a patch panel (or weld it in)
use body filler to get it nice and smooth
use self etching primer on the bare metal
put finish color on as needed
