Default Almost blew the car up tonight.

So tonight on my way to work, took my car on the highway, then when I got in town, I went to spray some windsheild wash to get some dirt off the the windsheild, find out there wasnt any fluid, so I still had some time to kill before I had to be at work, pull into a parking lot and fill the resivoir up, while doing that I noticed that the engine seemed awfully hot for normal, I checked it over, looked at the coolant resivoir, it was dry, and I mean nothing. So I drove to a gas station, they didnt have any coolant, went to work, driving up the call center driveway, the engine starts making a ticking noise, loud and not normal, I shut it off, worried about it my entire shift, and called my dad before starting the car.

He came, brought me some coolant, we made sure it wasnt leaking, and tried the car. Didnt tick, started up fine, and runs great, the resivoir is full (too full, some spilled out of the spout thing at the top, that lets the overflow, flow out, I thought it was a line leaking, but it was the spout) needless to say, I felt terrible for my car, I guess you relize how much you really have a bond with your car when stuff like this happens, haha, sounds dumb but I guess you need to be a car guy to understand one. Anyways, after all that, is there any percautions I should do?? thanks guys!

The missus tookher Contour to work because I was having tires put on her Taurus. She called to say it was running hot by the time she pulled into the parking lot. I met her after she was finished workand refilled the resivoir, car ran fine on the way home. This summer I flushed the radiator and refilled with fresh coolant. At that time I added a bottle of stop leak. I fugure the driver's side plastic radiator tank started leaking and until the stop leak worked lost two quarts of coolant. It would have been worse without the stop leak.
What should you do? Check all your hoses and your radiator for any signs of a leak. Check your oil, look for any milkiness under the oil cap or little bubbles on the dip stick. Repair as necessary. If your cooling system is fairly clean add a bottle of stop leak.

That is almost the worse thing to do. Stop leak is a bandaid fix, and a bad one at that. It can seal things that shouldn't be sealed, like coolant passages in the engine and radiator.
Its best to find the problem and fix it correctly.

I couldnt agree more with 89Daytona, my friend poured Stop leak in his Lumina. After that he lost his heater core. Since you live in Canada,I think you would like a heater.
