Default my ride

1995 Char Gold Satin Glow II Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 Magnum
well i dont know if you guys are in to this sorta thing but this is my ride... i am a 100% Mopar fan an even have the biggest Mopar "M" youll ever see on my back window..
it started off as a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a lil 4.0 I-6... i loved it... i loved the 4 link front an rear suspension.. i loved not having leaf springs in the rear.. i loved not having the sag you get after a few years from leaf springs.... i lifted it with 2 inch coil spacers, threw on 4 SkyJacker Shocks an put BFG A/T 31s on it.. i had a lil stupid stuff done to the motor.. nothin much... i raced it.. i hate 4 cyl rice burners an thats what i raced against ... then i wanted more.. so i was on the hunt for a V8.. after a year of searching i came across a wrecked 95 318 V8 with 46RH tranny an AWD t-case with 113K on the clock, front an rear axles with 3.73s... for $500... swap took about 2.5 days... i love the power a 318 MAGNUM V8 brings to a lil 4200# station wagon.. lol... not bad for being only 17 at the time... an yes (because i know someone who reads these an hates the fact that->) i worked my *** off to get it this far... lol... i destroyed a tranny because my aux tranny cooler (the one that sits in front of the condensor) got clogged... so i took the 46RH out an had it rebuilt with a shift kit, deep pan, extra clutches (or so he told me) temp sensor an guage, an a 1 year unlimited mile warranty for $900... tell me what you think... comment good or bad.. thanks guys and gals...

I used to have a 96 laredo 4x4 with the select trac 242. Its not as strong as the 249 with that viscous coupler that is bound to fail. I really miss that thing. I still want a 98 5.9 limited.

Did someone put the 46rh in it? The 5.2 came out with a 44rh. Only the 98 5.9 came with a 46re.

actually only 94s and 95s got the 46RH.. they went to the 44RE in 96 because of OBDII... ask me how i know all this and how i felt when i could only go to vehicles that were only made 2 years to find a tranny.. thats one of the reasons i just went ahead and had it rebuit... i coulda used one from a dodge truck with the 5.9 but the starters are on the driver side and would interfere with my driveshaft... these are tiny SUVs.. lol ... an yeah i love the 249... they say it can handle up to 750HP.. i know they used them in the 420HP SRT8 Jeeps..

http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/

thats why i couldnt understand why when you buy a heavy truck with a 318 you got a somewhat weaker tranny... and you buy a half ton SUV with a lil 318 you get a trans thats a lil bit heavier duty... ????? lol

oh okay, didn't realize that on the trannys. Makes sense the going to an electronic transmission in 96. Trust me I know the tranny feeling; us guys with the 4.0 got the crappy 42re while the cherokee guys got the nice aw4. You couldn't swap because the electronics of the two was different and damned near impossible to swap. A few guys got it to work, but still had issues. It uses a tcm while the 42re was integrated into the pcm.

Actually the srt 8 uses a totally different case. You have the 249 in yours right now. They went to the 247 in 99-04, and I think maybe into the wks, not sure.
The SRT-8 uses the NV146.

Things off hand about the 249, never ever run different size tires. Some guys said running bald tires and good tires would cause problems. The viscous coupler will burn up, and a new one is about $500 bucks. Its a non-serviceable part too. Most guys will swap over to the 242 case or take the guts out a 247, which uses a gyrator pump I believe. It depends if you want the awd or be able to switch in and out.

they must have switched over the years... i know when i was swappin in my V8, when i was takin the 42re out i was following the wires into the cab and they plugged into the TCM, mine was on the firewall right next to where the brake pedal plunger went outside... and my 46RH obviously is just a two plug trans.. one for NSS and the other is for the TC lockup, and all wires from it go into the PCM... but my 42RE had about 5 or so dif. connectors on it.. ill have to get pics of the TCm still in my jeep.. i never took it out incase something went wrong.. lol

on a side note, my motor was acting up one day and a 5 grand neutral drop thru the lil 42re yeilded a broken carrier in the rear end.. tranny was fine.. lol had i not removed the front driveshaft two days earlier i prob wouldve killed the tranny.. hehe..

didnt know that about the SRTs,... i too wanted to know what tcase came in them and i asked the question on an SRT forum...
EDIT: i went back and looked and the guy had switched the original out for a 249.. my fault... lol

sry for the novels.. i just like sharing knowledge..

Alot was to do with the ODB-II changeover from what I remember. The early build 93 grands had a aw4. In 93 and 94 you could even get one with a 5-spd! The 93's you could get no power, ie windows, locks, etc.

I really don't understand why the guy would've put the 249 in it, unless he just had it laying around. The 247 is far superior to it.

If you haven't checked them out a couple great sites are jeepforum and jeepsunlimited. They are the equivalent to this site in the jeep world. Tons of great info.
