Of the cars I have seen running for BIG numbers in CA, you get over 400hp on a stock unbuilt block and start collapsing rings. Dont feel too bad about it according to Force Fed Performance, the local Chevy and Ford Turbo/Super charging gurus, the chevy LS2 or 6 Liter in the C6 vette has the same problem if pushed beyond 500/550 hp.
Looking at some 2.4 rebuild articles and comparing parts with the older 2.5L I4 DC motors I would not want to push the stock rods much farther than that 400hp mark anyway.
