Default 1st Turbo Vehicle.. got a question

Okay, so like the title says, this is my first turbo vehicle. Used to have an '01 R/T that was a total loss years ago. So I have seen some SRT-4's that have a short ram intake, but still have the front mount intercooler. Is this a better set up for airflow? And how does the whole thing work? I thought the front mount brought air directly to the turbo. Then I saw something about a hot and a cold side... Can somebody explain this to me???

so the air starts coming in from the filter either on a short ram or the stock airbox then it gets sucked through the turbo on the intake side then is shot down under the engine to the passanger side of the intercooler, this is hot side. then it comes out the intercooler on the divers side, cold side, and then it sent into the intake manifold. on a stock turbo you wont notice an difference in power, its only like a 2-3 hp increase, but you will hear the turbo spool a lot louder. personally i love to listen to the turbo whine but thats just me everyones different. the biggest bang for your buck upgrade you can get for a stock srt-4 is an adjustable wastegate actuator. there are lots if different companies that make them i personally have an agp knock off from ebay and it works for me. the forward motion one is the best from what i have heard from other poeple but it cost a little more. the only "catch" if you can call it that is you have to adjust the wastegate when you first install it. they dont come preset. you have to make it loose first and then slowly tighten it up to you have the disered boost level, max 17 psi on stock fuel system. welcome and congrats on the new srt and enjoy

I'm new to the Turbo thing myself, Got a 05 white SRT4 a few months ago after years of mustangs, camaros, chevelles, been doing a lot of research too before doing anything to this car. From what I've read and from talking to people, if you are going to do anything get a wideband http://www.prostreetonline.com/x/aem...controller.asp

I plan on getting one after this winter and then I'll start throwing a few bolt ons onto the car.

Good reply mxrnick, one thing I's add is that the short ram will improve the airflow path to the turbo, but it will be sucking hot, underhood air, so it is not so great. Even though the stock airbox is rather restrictive, it is at least sucking air from outside the engine compartment. I suppose, on a cool day, driving down the road the short ram would be an improvement, but on a hot day sitting in traffic, it would be worse than stock. The best is probably the long rams, but you have to get a good system that uses baffles to keep tire splashed water out of the air filter. I, myself, use the stock airbox but with flexible dryer ducting that goes form the airbox inlet, down to the lower grill at the left side of the IC, trying to capture some "ram" air and cool air. Seems to work pretty good, course it is totally quiet and I dont get any cool turbo noises but that is actually ok since my exhaust is so damn loud. If my car were quieter, I would not mind.

cool, thanks for the reply guys... Ive been looking around at intakes and found the Hahn Racecraft (HRC) intake looks pretty good to me, and the design looks okay too. I would still find some type of ram intake that i can attach to the bottom of the front fender, slim lowprofile of course, and maybe use some type of flex hose to funnel air up where the stock air box would have been. Im just hoping the HRC system will fit with an AGP up pipe and hks blowoff valve kit.
