Staged pcm's and OBDII Enhanced Emissions
that's what we're here for!
a friend of mine is going to be using my car as a test dummie to create something to allow the toys ecu to pass emissions, i'll keep you updated as to how that goes.

back when I had my turbo 98 civic a friend of mine had an srt-4 (I loved the way it drove from the factory is main reason I bought mine this weekend
)
anyway, in atlanta even with OBDII they still look for cats under the car so we had no problems there but he had the stage 2 w/toys setup and for some reason it still threw the code so we just did what I did on my turbo civic to pass.
got an extra ecu harness off of ebay and hacked it inline with a pair of switches on the main power feed to each ecu and ran a stage 0 ecu under the passenger seat.
sounds like a bit of work at first but being able to just flip a pair of switches each subsequent year to kick back to the stage 0 ecu (doesnt everyone keep their stock parts?) to pass real quick was worth it.
once I get a year or so on mine I'm doing the same thing.
his did run a little richer due to having the larger injectors and whatnot still on the car but it still passed emissions WAYY under the limit. Though, we only checked it JUST this year since 2 years ago his car was brand new and you get 2 year grace period for new cars not needing emisions here in smoglanta.
maybe this will give some people a few ideas

the only pending readiness test would be the o2 sensor. if pa allows you one, then there's your one. just be sure that the others are ok. the reason that the toys ecu's fail have nothing to do with readiness tests. it's because they throw three codes related to automatic transmissions. there is no way to bypass these codes by changing a few lines around. the toys ecu's fail, period. a few people are looking into creating a box which will give power to the appropriate circuits so that the codes do not appear, but for now there is no way to make the toys ecu's pass as is in states where there are stricter emissions laws other than removing the toys ecu.

pa laws might be different from ny. each state makes its own decision as to what codes a car can pass throwing. from what others have told me in pa, toys don't pass. how yours did i'm not sure, do you still have the print out from the inspection? and was it an emissions inspection or only a safety one? i'm not sure if pa is the same, but in ny you get emissions every other year with safety only inspections inbetween. i would be interested in seeing that print out if you do have it.

I don't think I got the printout. If I did it's at home and I'll check to see after work. In PA it's insp/emmissions every year, and he did both. He said something about having to hook up some lines/wires differently while testing it, but I am not sure which - he didn't clarify. Maybe I am just lucky, or maybe my mechanic is that good, I don't know. I'll definitely ask him about it next time I am in there (which will be soon - axles[:'(]).
stacz - that sounds like way too much work for something so simple. all that needs to be done it seems is change the s3 ecu for the s0 one. it takes 10 mintues or so to do this. why spend all the time creating a harness to mount the s0 ecu in the car (which just adds weight! lol).
it's a nice idea, just seems like overkill for this situation.

Post,
As for the Pa Emission laws, anything 96 or newer that has a stored memory code (for anything, trans, abs you name it) instantly fails.
This is both harsh, and sad, but that's the beauty of our overcrowded little state!
So, for instance, if you have say...a 02 taurus that has a stored p300 or a Converter clutch code, it will fail, no matter what you do. and...if you clear the codes or disconnect the battery....
Whamo!!!! it kicks you out, not ready for testing.
And.....in the near future, our OBDII machines will be equiped with cameras!! That's right, so big brother can be sure that you are really testing the car that you say you are!!!
What a beautiful state!!
