I have an SRT-4 S1 but I have not made any exhaust modifications yet. My exhaust sounds very nice and smooth. The other day I was at the track watching a few other modified SRT-4s run, which had exhaust modifications. Their cars were popping and almost backfiring down the track. A lot of the guys thought it sounded cool. From my experience with other turbo cars this is a sign of detonation problems. Is it normal for this to occur with exhaust mods?? Or is this just something to expect with heavier modded SRTs?

 

mine sounds like a chinese firecracker with stage 2/toys and the mopar exhaust... chalk that up to a rich condition... it scares the V8's ;-) I think it's neat personally... but... the popping and cracking is pretty common... no worries.

 

In any high compression vehicle, when the exhasut is opened up past a certain point, they'll all pop. I took the cat back system off my explorer and when i let off the gas, it started popping. There isn't enough back pressure to keep the exhaust gases regulated while the RPM's are dropping and there is nothing forcing the old exhaust out.

Perfectly normal. Happens even w/ the stock exhaust, but the CAT tones it down alot so you don't hear it. Makes even more noise when you have an MSD revlimiter and are WOT shifting
