Default boost?

Being a newby and all to the turbo scene how do u read the boost gauge.I know stock its suppose to read about 12psi or so.someone school me please.[:@]

to start, when you fire it up, it will read around -20. first gear youll only run around 7psi. 2nd not much more, maybe 13? (yall that are still stock feel free to correct me as im goin off the top of my head here). third gets up to 17 and levels off around 14-15. same for 4th. not too sure about 5th, as its used as more of an overdrive gear. i rarely ever go fast enough to be worrying about boosting through 5th.

Uh you are sort of correct actually you can boost up to 14 psi in 1st and all the way through 5th and you should never....if the car is stock and not leaking or having boost spike...never go over 14 psi....unless say you are in 5th gear at 55 mph and you stomp your gage will go to 17 psi....but when your rpms get higher say about 3000 or so your boost will go back to 14 depending on outside air temperature.

alot of people stock will never see over 11-12 in first, thats really cuting it. With a aftermarket wastegate and runing a vacumn line from the wastegate to the turbo nipple you can make any boost you want in first gear. When you reroute the vacumn lines the PCM no longer controls your boost for traction and driveability reasons. I have a kinetic wastegate set for 15 hold 13-12 and first through 2nd is alot of wheel spin because the boost comes on alot faster and solid.

stock I would hit 11 first, second 14-15, third 15, fourth 15-16, 5th almost a waste of time since your alllready going way to fast.
