tone ring
I just want to say Thanks to Pressurecooker for giving the Technical class for the day. The technology in these cars changes so fast year to year it's tough for even the best Technicians ( which I'm not ) to keep up with. That's why we have new training on the new models every year at my work, last years cars are quite often different from this years cars. We spend a small fortune on training at my job just to keep our Technicians up to date.
I'm going to drop "Tone Ring" on my service advisor the next time I take my SRT-4 in for service..........
"What's the problem with your SRT-4 today, sir?"
"Dunno, I think it might be the tone ring."
Quickly walking away to the coffee and donuts in the customer waiting area to watch the head scratching begin.........

Why don't you read what Pressurecooker said and look at the pics that I posted and maybe you will understand and realize that it is a real part and it can malfunction it shouldn't but it can....and that is what the dealership called it "tone ring"
I don't think there is a question to the part, or the fact it's broken...
it's just strange how it broke and how the car reacted, I think that is the question. It is not normal and does not make sense.

Well, that is what the dealership told me that they forced the car to crank by by-passing the crank sensor. When they let out on the clutch they said that they heard a "pop" and they did the same thing again heard another "pop". Then they insisted that it was my clutch. I said that there is no way possible that it was and do not touch my clutch. So they ran a check for the crank sensor that is lined up against the tone ring. And they found a signal but the car still wouldn't crank unless they forced it by by-passing the sensor. So they went in to inspect the crank sensor and that is when the tone ring was found in the bottom of my oil pan. And I was mistaken by saying that my pistons bottomed out of my camshafts....it was more likely the crank shaft....but either way...who really knows what happened? I sure as heck don't....But I also don't think that it was anything that I did to cause the damage....I was told by the mechanic who fixed my car....that in the way he found my car that it wouldn't NOT crank.....but when I was at the dealership getting my car towed....the "mechanics/idiots" there repeatedly told me don't crank the car......but in the way that the mechanic found it it wouldn't have anyways.....I don't really know what else to say besides I hope noone else ever has to go through this.....And after the car was fixed even over a month later car runs GREAT
