Default sludge?

So i put a catch can on and i am amazed at the amount of oil that has already collected. that brings me to my question. my car has 13000 miles of driving w/o a catch can on. how far back can the mess go... and what do i need to do to make things better. what should i have to clean.

i was askin cause i went to lowes to buy the stuff to build mine and the i couldnt figure out the filter drain on the one i bought. for some reason it wouldnt seal off. i was testing it with water so that could have been the problem due to the fact that water is nowhere near as thick as oil is. reguardless i took it back so i need to find me an all purpose filter that will seal off

Do normal catch cans have filters? ie: AGP's, Greddy's, JMB'setc.

None that I've ever seen. I took the little white filter element out of my Campbell-Hausfeld $20 OCC because it seems to catch more oil without it......
