New guy needs help with price negotiations!
I'm in a bit of a quandary here.
A local Dodge dealership has a used '08 SXT with 16k miles listed at $14,8. I took the car for a test drive this weekend and it's in pretty good condition.
If I get my loan preapproved from the bank/credit union, I'm probably jumping all over this thing.
However, I need some suggestions on what to walk in and offer these guys, as Edmunds.com lists the price of the used car for more than what the dealer is asking:
The dealer has it at $14,800 right now, and Edmunds lists the car as:
Trade in: $16,486
Private party: $18,701
Retail: $20,494
Sooo.. what do I do? Should I walk in, offer a grand or two less and start the negotiations or what? I know I'm looking at 4k for my trade in, and if I could pick this car up for 9k, I'd be partying all the way home.
So, barring the "Dude, get a Hemi" bit, because I'm locked into getting a 3.5, I could use some of you seasoned car price negotiators to throw me a bone here!

Well, sometimes a deal is as good as it is going to get...
But remember that when you walk in and are working on a deal, dont let them push things through. if you dont like how things are going, tell them you need a minute to think about it. Get up, walk outside, get on your phone... make them think you are thinking about walking out on the deal. The problem with Used is they dont treat them like new cars... A good negotiator can work the price of new a lot lower than used...
Just remember that money talks, and if they know you are going to buy a car today, whether its from them or not, you have a lot of power.
Dont be afraid to use that power. sometimes walking on them is more powerful than any words you can say.
Keep in mind though, they already have the car priced very reasonably. You wont work them down a whole lot more I am guessing...
