Default Key fobs lost programming

Hi
I have an 05 Durango with the security key fob. The key I was using suddenly stopped working. The car would start and immediately die. After several attempts the car would not even turn over. I had a second key that also came with the car in the console and it worked. When I got home, I tried a third key, purchased later, and it did not work. The Dodge dealer charged me $174 for a key and $145 for diagnosis and programming. I wonder why one of two original keys stopped working and the third key that I keep at home stopped working. Did I get ripped? Is there a less expensive way to get the third key replaced? Thanks for any info you can share.
