first one was interesting...almost got me killed.no seriously! i bought this 1990 Dakota ext cab with a 3.9 and a bad trans.weird, huh?a bad trans in a Dakota.well anyway,i was operating a mustang spec-shop at the time, new to Dodge, and couldnt find a decent 318/auto to throw into it.so one night over several pints we decide to see how a 302 would fit into the now empty engine bay...one thing turns into another and the 90 wound up with an EFI 5.0 Mustang motor in it with an AOD trans.stupid thing fit better than a 318,and with a chevy astro driveshaft it was almost a bolt in.after a few months i decide to attend a local Moparfest.again, let em re-iterate,booze is THE DEVIL.i decide to ENTER THE TRUCK IN THE SHOW.got lots of comments on the way in "sounds good! what exhaust you running,it sounds different!"
soooo i park with a lineup of RTs and stuff...then open the hood
bad idea,i can tell you that much.it got ugly fast.i ended up leaving fastER.lesson learned i tell you
so now, older and wiser i pick up a 1996 Dakota Sport extended cab.beautiful truck, stripper,no power anything, but it has a 318 Magnum, auto and 3.90 sure grip.what it DOESNT have is 4 forward gears in the box. 1 and 2 work great, truck is fast as heck up to 70 km/h but it wont shift into 3rd.im told by some trans buddies that the governor solenoid/sensors go bad and this might cause the problem.other guys say dont bothe, slap in an old 3 speed auto and enjoy
i went and bought a 95 reg cab short box 318 with a 5 speed.for parts.perfect. started doing the swap yesterday, got the trans out today and started cleaning stuff up before the 5 speed goes in. INSANELY easy swap thus far...ive been doing auto-to-5 speed swaps for 20 years on mustangs and the worst part is the pedal bracket, takes an afternoon, pain in the butt.well on the Dakota i had the old brake pedal out, then new brake pedal in,the master cyl support and the clutch pedal in in less than half an hour, easy as pie.in fact the truck is really easy to work on compared to all the ford/gm stuff ive worked on for the last several decades
anyhoo, just wanted to babble incessantly for a while and say hi,and MAN there are some smart people on this board, especially compared to some of the mustang sites ive been on...enough said about that nudge nudge
have a nice day
