Default 2002 rear differential problems

Hi All,
I have a 2002 2500 4wd 5.9 gas w 46k on it. I do not remember the gear ration of the rear end. It is stock. I am hearing a grinding noise, not squealing, from the rear of the truck. I did observe some oil leaking from the rear differential. Front seal area at driveshaft point + leaking from case itself. Changing fluid/gasket has stopped leak from case, but did nothing at front driveshaft point as I expected. The front seal seams to have failed somewhat as well. I opened the case to drain the oil out/inspect gears. Pinion does have some play in it, [according to my safety inspection mechanic] a grey slurry was on the magnet. I found NO chunks of gears + all gears look brand new, nice crisp edges on all gears I could see. My best guess is at least one of the bearings around the axle[s] is going. How do I determine for sure/change. I have a repair manual, but it describes how to change on a 'floating' axle. I don't know if I have that nor sure what that means exactly. Also, the rear brakes are in great condition, so it is not the breaks. Thanx in advance for any help.
