Default Dodge virgin, need some advice

Howdy all! I'm from Houston, I've been lurking for quite some time soaking up all the info I can, and the time has come to look for a new truck. I currently drive a 1997 Ranger XLT 4.0, but it has 230k miles and is having engine issues.

I'm looking at two Dodges right now, and would like some input.

2001 Ram 1500 Laramie SLT
Specs:
- 5.9 360 V8
- 5 speed auto
- 150k miles
- 4x4
- .ext cab
- 6" lift with 33" almost new BFG mud terrains
- Replacement rear bumper, grill guard, and tool box.
The interior and exterior of this truck are in immaculate condition (with the exception of the cracked dash)
Asking price: $7,000 cash

- or -

2003 Ram 2500
Specs:
- 5.7 Hemi
- 200k miles
- short bed, quad cab
- Auto
- Heavy duty front bumper
Now here's the bad part... the motor is blown. The guy is asking $3000 for the truck. I did a little digging and found a Hemi motor with 75k miles for $1200. I assume a motor swap would be no big deal, right?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome aboard BreakerBar! Stay tuned - a Technician (or member) will jump in shortly with a suggestion. In the meantime, don't forget to browse Sub-Forums: Ram for stuff related to your ride.

Both are good motors , It pretty much comes down to which truck do YOU like best.
If input is what you're after, I'll throw mine in for ***** and giggles...
2003 was the first year for the Hemi return , so there were some things left out in that year which were added in 04' & 05' then more changes came through the years. My point is , If you want to add performance to a stock engine , the 03' Hemi is not a good year for it.. It's a great motor , and would be my choice if I were going to stay stock....
2001 was a good year for the 360 Motor , Dodge has built that motor long enough to work out the bugs , Therefor : With the 360 change in performance and horsepower is fairly reasonable in price and not much work , Making it the motor of choice "For Me" If changes were in the future..
PRICE : Price wise- The Hemi sounds like the best deal..I would put a 05' motor and harness in it, Then you'd be getting the best of both worlds...
These are only my opinions and "are" open for discussion..
