Default Hi! New Neon Stock Car Racer

Hi all,

I'm Michael, budding mechanic and new Neon owner. I just picked up a used Neon that has been "converted" into a stock car racing machine for short track racing in 4 cylinder divisions. I formerly raced a Nissan Sentra and used the Sentra forums that I found for great information, I'm hoping to do the same here! I'm off to research your search function - probably the best tool on these forums. Thanks and look forward to sharing my experiences and help where I can.

Regards,
Michael

Hi! It's a 96 Plymouth Neon (according to the VIN decoder) and basically, when you prep a 4 cyl car for the small track racing here in the Northern Midwest, you take out all side/front windows, all interior decorations and paneling, rear seats, passenger seat - anything that would burn. You also should put in a roll cage, 5 pt harness and a racing seat - I've been safe with a stock seat with the harness/cage. We also typically remove the A/C system and even the power steering - reduce weight.

Most people will try to make thier suspension a bit more performance oriented, but almost all tracks constrain 4 cyl racers to stick with stock only parts - you can get away with a bit of tweaking here and there, but no real obvious header/turbo/stillen/eibach/hotshot type of changes. I'm sure some people do anyway with interior mods (cams/pulley/porting) but most tracks have claim rules that can allow a car to be claimed for as little as $300! A disincentive to put thousands of dollars in your 4 cyl if someone else can claim it.

Anyway, I had a 91 Nissan Sentra, ran the doors off that thing and won a race this past weekend after 20 races, but same night I got caught up in someone elses mess, ended up going up and over the wall - the Sentra was finished. A friend had this 96 Neon for sale, already in race fit, so here I am!

Pictures? Sure - the first pic below is me in my Sentra actually racing against the car I just bought. The second pic is the Neon itself.

Regards,
Michael
