Default 98 Dakota 5 speed problem

I just joined up and looking for some insite to my problem. I have a 98 Dakota with a 5 speen manual. I heard something break and upon further inspection I found a small hole in the tail shaft of the tranny. My question is, see the tail shaft can be unbolted can I remove just the tail shaft and repair what is broken inside or will I have to disassemble the entire transmission

I would not be too optomistic that you can, that is kinda rare for any 5-speed extension housing to slip right off, but there is always those few...It may help if you can identify what 5-speed trans you have....

Welcome! Hole n tailshaft? Never heard of it before. Im thinking it might be worth looking into deeper to find out what the heck is going on and what could have caused it. After all loosing a tranny out on the road is a bear and none of us want to be there.
