Default Tach quit, and no alternator output

I have a 95 with a Cummins engine. Two weeks ago while driving, the A.C. quit. A mile or two farther, I noticed that the Tach was at "0", and the battery voltage was low. I shut the engine off, and had to get a "boost" to get it started. I made sure everything was off, and headed for home. On the freeway, I noticed that the voltage was back up to around 14 V. I turned on the A.C., and it was fine. Everything has been fine until today. The alternator has no "excitation" voltage. The tach sets at the bottom. I have checked all fuses, and all are good. Relays checked. All OK. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone had this problem? The engine runs fine, if I charge the battery. Joel.223
