Solution to Removing 'Rain-X' Type Coatings
Hi all
I was going crazy trying to remove a coating off the windshield of my brand new vehicle. I'm pretty sure it was Rain-X or a similar type product applied by the dealer.
The effect was an oily type film that was only visible when the windshield was wet. I was told it was probably a silicone based product and almost impossible to remove.
Over the last thirty years I've collected every type of chemical you can imagine in my garage. I tried every one with no luck. They included acetone, solvent, glass cleaners, vinegar, ammonia, d-greasers, baking soda and a ton of others in various combinations. Nothing worked.
Here's the solution.
Get yourself some Turtle Wax Scratch and Swirl Remover. There are lots of other brands but this is the one I used. You can rub it on by had but I used a sheep skin pad on an electric buffer.
It took all of about fifteen minutes and 'made my day'.
No more film of the windshield. Just clear glass!
The product I used has I assume, just enough abrasive in it to remove the coating but not enough to scratch the glass.
