Default Vehicle Speed Sensor Question

New to this site and hope I might get some help. My speedometer on my 1999 Ram 1500 4X4 (Laramie) has been acting up for the last 6 months. It will only register speed when I get up to about 40 mph. Well today, it doesn't register any speed at all no matter how fast I go. I was told that it's probably the Vehicle Speed Sensor. If true, is it located on the top/side of the transfer case or is it located in the differential in the rear? Any help is appreciated.
