Default Need help

I just bought a used 2000 dodge caravan sport. I didn't know there was an alarm. It went off, my friend disconnected the battery which of course didn't work. I figured out how to stop the alarm, but then the van wouldn't start. The lights and all still came on but it wouldn't turn over. We then noticed that there was a wire hanging down near the brake pedal with a small rubber button on it. My friend pushed the button on it and the van started. We got it home but I'm not sure what this button is and what it's true function is. I don't want to drive it and get stuck again, please can anyone tell me what it is and should I be worried? Thanks
