Red face hello everyone 2011 since last

thanks for the opportunity to revisit the forum. My ever reliable 2003 2wd v6 dakota. honestly the best and most trouble free vehicle i have ever owned at 256k miles speedometer has quit working properly. naturaly i have already replaced the pick up(speed sensor) with no change. the way it acts it seems like whatever it picks up its signal from has broke free from the output shaft. at slow speeds it will work until it starts slipping cant keep up with shaft and quits. the bounving needle the way it looks makes me think this. i guess my question is : is that posible and is it something i can maybe pull tailshaft housing off and fix.? i thank you and would appreciate any advice.
