okay...someone tell me if this makes sense or if i just have to much time on my hands to think. OK...since the air an engine takes in is about 78% nitrogen and only 21% Oxygen, couldnt you somehow use a bottle of O2 sinceall you need is the oxygenand fuel to have combustion,and then instead of the normal 14.7 parts air : 1 part fuel ratio, you would have about a 5 parts Oxygen : 1 part fuel, and you would be able to stuff more of that mixture in through the engine every intake stroke, which in simple terms, would make a bigger bang! i have been sitting around all day thinking about this...have i gone crazy??? someone please tell me haha

 

Yes, you are crazy. But please make a video for everyone's enjoyment! Pure oxygen will spontaneously combust any oil orother fuel present. ie no spark or fire needed

It basically will react to the extreme with almost anything, often violently. (oil,gas,metals,rubber, probably antifreeze and brake fluid) Nitrous is a controlled way to add O2 and gets the added benefit of refrigerative effect.

 

Yea I've thought about the same thing, except I have a diesel so I don't have to worry about pre ignition during compression. I was thinking, well I've got an 8 ft box a welding tank of oxygen is pretty cheap and is at high pressure, so I'd still get the cooling effect. I wasn't thinking pure O2, but maybe just enrich the air after to turbo a bit, maybe 50% or so.

 

Nitrous works well with diesels too. O2 is not liquified in thecylinder as N2O is, so the O2 tank wouldn't last long even for drag racing. I'm no expert on drag racing, but they probably wouldn't allow you on a track with O2. Higher oxygen content, instead of higher boost would probably sent EGTs through the roof and burn a hole through the pistons or head.

 

And unless you added a ton more fuel with it, you would go REALLY lean and cause serious problems.

 

That's the beauty of a diesel my friend, lean doesn't matter. It is being to rich that you have to worry about, that makes excessive EGT's and melts things.

 

I've done it....Don't :P About a year ago I had an older Saturn and didn't really care what happened so a friend and I experimented. We had a tank of oxygen with a hose ran to the intake. He sat in the passenger seat and when I'd say he'd turn the **** to send it to the engine. As soon as it hit there were a couple of loud pops and the car shut off. So we started it up and did it again. Same thing happened even when we let very little pure oxygen in. We concluded that this wasn't a good idea :P Luckily it didn't mess anything up but I wouldn't ever risk it again.
