Saturn's Imitation of a Viper

RE: Saturn's Imitation of a Viper: Sky!
Saturn's latest two-seat roadster shares little other than its name with the company's 2-year-old concept. In fact, there are a lot more similarities with the Pontiac Solstice, with which the Sky will share its platform. The design of this sporty rear-wheeler will spearhead an aesthetic offensive that the company hopes to repair its recent misfortunes with. In the style department, the Sky should set a new standard for Saturn, with a muscular outward appearance, enhanced by wedge-shaped projector beam headlights. The Sky's 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder, which yields 170 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, can be paired with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. Production should start at the end of this year in order to meet delivery dates at the beginning of 2006. The Sky will likely sell for less than $25,000.

Not bash the Viper....BUT... I think it is commendable that a domestic market company is making an effort to break into the small sport-convertable market, offering a compromise for those who might want something more aggressive than a Miata, but are not financialy solvent enough for a S2000. Plus, this offers a bargain alternative from a used Z3, with more power than the base four cylinder in that line-up. Finally, I frankly do not understan what is so inspiring (technologically or otherwise) about shoving a huge engine into a sports-coupe platform and then pricing it into orbit at $80,000, miles beyond the reach of 99% of the car buying public. Lastly, with all the smack that is being talked on the behalf on Daimler-Chrysler, I ask where is THEIR small platform front-engine, RWD convertible priced under $25,000. Not to mention the incalcualble suffering of anyone who ever sat through an episode of "Viper" the TV series.
