Miller Masters Salem High Banks

SALEM IN (9-17-05) – Rookie Joey Miller, in the no. 9 Country Joe Homes Dodge, held off a ferocious last-lap charge from fellow rookie driver Ken Weaver to win the thrilling Eddie Gilstrap Motors Fall Classic 200 by Advance Auto Parts Saturday night at Salem Speedway. It was Miller’s fourth ARCA RE/MAX Series win of 2005 and fifth of his career.

“The guys just worked absolutely awesome on this racecar,” said Miller from victory lane. “More credit needs to go to the crew than anything else. They worked so fast to put this car back together.”

Miller had smoked the wall during a practice session earlier in the day but rebounded with a fourth place qualifying run and, ultimately, the victory.

However, not even Miller’s victory could stop Frank Kimmel’s quest for a record seventh ARCA RE/MAX Series championship.

Kimmel, who had run well early in the event, suffered heavy damage to his no. 46 Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford after getting caught up in a multi-car crash off turn four on lap 87. As a result, Kimmel lost 42 laps on pit road for repairs but later returned to finish 25th, good enough to officially clinch the 2005 ARCA RE/MAX Series championship provided the team shows up and competes in the season finale at Talladega Superspeedway.

“We were really comfortable with the car until that incident,” said Kimmel. “We’re glad we wrapped up the championship and we’re ready to celebrate at Talladega.”

Weaver, in the no. 20 1-800-4-A-Phone Pontiac, finished second one length away. “We clobbered the wall during the race, and the car just never handled after that,” said Weaver. “We had a blast though. I absolutely love this track. The crew was fantastic on pit stops all night and gave me the opportunity to win this race.”

Michael Simko, in the no. 45 Mound Steel-Diamond Racing Chevrolet, finished a career-best third ahead of Billy Venturini, who finished fourth in the no. 25 Central Merchant Services-ReadyHosting.com Chevrolet. Todd Bowsher, in the no. 21 Safe Auto Insurance Ford, rounded out the top five finishers.

And, while Miller’s Dodge was extremely strong throughout the night leading 81 laps overall, two late-race cautions caused a delay in Miller’s victory. The first of which occurred on lap 195 when Josh Clemons, in the no. 41 Larry Clemons Racing Ford, spun along the backstretch several times, hitting the inside retaining wall hard.

Cleanup of the incident caused a green white checker finish, with Miller leading Weaver and Simko to the line. Miller charged ahead on the restart, leading the field to the white flag by several car lengths only to receive the caution again before he could cross the checkers as a result of an accident involving Norm Benning and Brandon Knupp in turn one.

On the restart, Weaver stayed right with Miller making a last-lap charge falling short at the checkered flag by a margin of victory of .173 seconds. In all, the 200-lap race went 13 laps into overtime to secure the ARCA-mandated green flag finish.

David Ragan led the first 53 laps and was a contender most of the night until an unscheduled pit stop put the Unadilla, Georgia driver three laps down. Ragan eventually finished 16th, two laps down.

Other lap leaders included Simko, who led 39 laps, and Weaver, who led 36. Simko also earned Gladiator of the Race honors. Mike Chaffee, crew chief of the no. 9 Country Joe Homes Dodge, was the SK Hand Tool Crew Chief of the race.

By virtue of his win, Miller was the highest finishing rookie, the ReadyHosting.com lap leader of the race, and earned the Hurst Golden Shifter Award.

Seventeen-year-old Brett Hudson, in only his sixth career start, earned the Pork Pole Award with a speed of 113.227 mph.
