Yeley's 183 mph lap good for Busch pole
By Jenna Fryer, The Associated Press

08:28 PM EST (01:28 GMT)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- J.J. Yeley won the first pole of his NASCAR career Friday when he took the top spot for the Busch Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

Yeley, driving a Chevrolet fielded by Joe Gibbs Racing, turned a lap at 183.084 mph to qualify first for Saturday's Hershey's Kissable 300. He was the only driver to go over 183 mph, besting Aaron Fike and Clint Bowyer.

It gave Yeley his first turn in the spotlight this Speedweeks, but he has a ways to go before he rivals teammate Denny Hamlin's feats. Hamlin wowed NASCAR last week by besting the Nextel Cup veterans in winning the Budweiser Shootout exhibition race.

Yeley and Hamlin, both Cup rookies for Gibbs this season, will certainly be in competition this year.

"Denny is going to be one of the toughest competitors on the Cup side as far as Rookie of the Year," Yeley said. "I am just going to have to use his success to push myself a little bit harder. We did that last year in the Busch Series, and we'll have a little bit of a friendly rivalry between teammates to push ourselves to do better."

Fike turned his lap at 182.934 mph and Bowyer, one of seven Cup regulars who plan to also run a full Busch schedule, was just a tick slower at 182.931.

Johnny Sauter qualified fourth and John Andretti, who plans to run a full Busch schedule this season, was fifth.

Andretti, who has made 340 career Cup starts, is classified as a Busch Series rookie because he has only competed in one previous event. It means he has a yellow stripe on the back of his car, must attend weekly rookie meetings and is entitled to an extra practice session every week.

Fike, whose previous best finish was fourth last season, seemed somewhat in awe of racing against Andretti.

"I remember the first time I met (Andretti) I think we were on the same flight," Fike said. "It was probably three years ago and I think I went up and got his autograph and introduced myself."

The 43-car field will feature 18 Nextel Cup regulars, including defending race winner Tony Stewart, who qualified 16th. Dale Earnhardt Jr., a three-time winner of the event, qualified 20th.

Champ Car star Paul Tracy, who will make his NASCAR debut in the event, qualified 40th.

"I think I just want to finish the race," Tracy said. "I think if we don't get involved in any crashes that happen and don't have any problems and our stops go OK, then maybe we can finish inside the top 15. That would be great."

Kasey Kahne was running a great race and was up front mostly, and lead many times. But he got collected in a wreck, caused by a bone head move by Biffle. It completely wrecked the car, and he was done.

McMurray was also having a great day in the car owned by Rusty Wallace. He got collected in a wreck also, though not as bad, he never made it back to the front.

Tony Stewart passed Dale Earnhardt Jr. with 11 laps to go and held off a three-wide pack to win the Hershey's Kissables 300 at Daytona on Satuday.

Kyle Busch was clipped by Denny Hamlin, and Busch's car slammed into Jamie McMurray, sending him spinning into the grass for the ninth caution. Stewart had just passed Earnhardt when the yellow flag came out.

The race-record 10th caution flew for debris, but Stewart held the field in check on the restart with five to go and defended his Busch Series season-opening victory from last season.

Clint Bowyer slipped past Burney Lamar on the final turn to finish second before a multi-car pileup slid by the start-finish line.

The race had a Nextel Cup flavor all day, as 18 Cup regulars were in the field. Although trouble followed half of them, five of the top-10 finishers were Buschwhackers.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the most laps (48) but finished 17th.
