A 27-year-old racer was killed Saturday night when his car sailed over the banking at a Cullman County [AL] dirt track and went full speed into a piece of heavy equipment more than 100 yards away. The throttle on Keith Hays' car apparently stuck wide open just as a practice session began at River Valley Raceway near Interstate 65 between Cullman and Birmingham. The driver from Morris was pronounced dead at the scene. The track canceled Fourth of July races scheduled for Sunday. Funeral services for Hays will be at Morgan Funeral Home in Gardendale at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, with visitation from 6 to 8 tonight. Hays is survived by his parents, Dan and Mary Jane Hays, and his brother Ken.(Alabama Live)(7-5-2004)
