Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default Engine Selection Help Needed

I have a 1983 Dodge Ramcharger 4x4 wit a 318 Cu. In. engie currently in it. I was looking for help in selecting a 6 cylinder to put into it that will produce sufficient torque to get te 4x4 perfomance when needed, but will assist on fuel economy.

Any suggestions? Thank you:

I'd say get a straight six, you get a butt load off torque, and better fuel economy with a good tuning and you can always go over size on the pistons, I've had some good success with the sixes on 4x4's, they did come in some ramchargers, but notto many that I've seen lately, so good luck finding one. hope it helps.

You will be in worse shape by down sizing to a six, even if you regear you will still be making the 6 work harder to pull the Ramcharger, stick with the V8 and just do the mods to it to improve your mileage. Believe me, I have a 360 in my 97 and get 18 highway and a Big Block in My Ramcharger and get roughly 12 highway on it. You wont do any better with a 6 cylinder pulling a 6000 pound rig.
