Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default 4x4 to 4x2?

Bought a '77 Ramcharger. I like it, but I think I would like it better if it were a 2wd. I'm not new to mopar, but I'm kinda new to 4x4's. The 203 transfer case is a little noisy, and I'm 99% on paved roads, so I don't know if I like the full time 4 wheel drive.
I was thinking of putting in a regular 727 from a 2wd. Perhaps a drive shaft? Anyone done this, and am I leaving out anything?? thanks

You need to swap the transfer case not the trans. Or put on locking hubs on the front axle.

Ok, I can try to find another transfer case. Curious, it seems the 203 was used in GM's and Ford's also. Would one of those work also??? Is it a pain to go to the 205 transfer case?

But back to going to 2wd, could I just swap to a 2wd tranny and different drive shaft? Do I need a different cross member also?

A different transfer case will allow you to shift it into 4WD or 2WD when needed. Not sure what one you need. You could pull the trans and t case and put in a 2WD tranny but why would you do that with 4X4. You could even got a front axle out of a newer truck that has a cad unit. Yes you will need a different cross member if you put in a 2WD trans along with a longer drive shaft. Locking hubs or a different front axle would be the cheapest and least time consuming.
