Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default '87 Ramcharger Electrical Issues

I have an '87 Ramcharger Royal SE that has developed some electrical issues.

#1. When starting, I have to turn the key to start and jerk the steering wheel to the left to get it to turn over. If I don't jerk the wheel, it does nothing.
#2. My heat/ac blower no longer comes on. The blower still works, just not from the controls ( I wired in a toggle switch so I could at least have heat).
#3. My windows no longer work. They both have brand new motors, which still work when I wire it straight to the battery.

From what research I have done, this is a common problem with '70s and '80s mopars. Has anyone else had this issue, what was the cause, and how did you fix it?

Thanks in advance

Not being there is a problem as it's hard to diagnose long distance. However, just guessing here, #1 and possibly #3 sound like a problem with the ignition switch. #2 sounds like your blower motor resistor block. Those eventually melt or fail and may run full blast or not at all.

From what research i have done online for #1 and #3, thats what i have read. The problem is either the switch or the main wire connection. As far as the blower, ive read a couple things that say the switch/wire connection could also cause it to go out.

I'm pretty sure your blower problem is the resistor block. I don't have a first gen right now and haven't had one for several years. If I remember correctly, the resistor is behind the glove box and mounted on the blower housing. There's a plug on top or the side and it mostly sits inside the plenum so the air blows over it. It's a common failure. Either the fan will only blow on high or it won't blow at all.

You need to investigate the ignition issue but i would bet it's the ignition switch. Have seen all the issues with blower, Mainly a bad connection on the resistor or fan switch. Hi fan bypasses the resistor, Each of the slower fan speeds use a different part of the resistor. If the window motors work it has to be in the wiring or the switch/es. Look up the wiring and go from there.
