Ramcharger, Trailduster & Power Wagon Grrrr!! Tough Trucks! The Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Trailduster were full size SUV's that had good looks and brute strength. The Dodge Power Wagon was comparable to them in toughness, but came in pickup truck form only.

Default 83 Ramcharger tie rod end?

1983 Dodge Ramcharger. Four wheel drive, auto, 318", 2bbl, auto locking hubs. I need to change the right outer tie rod end. There is no inner tie rod end, the tie rod goes all the way to the drivers wheel. The problem is the tie rod end has fine threads. Every one I get from (several auto parts stores) the store has course threads. I've tried to go several years in either direction and they all call for this same tie (course threads) rod end. Any ideas?

Maybe tell the parts guy you want rod ends for a 70 K-10 chevy and see what that gets ya. Fine thread rod ends 9/16-18 or 5/8-18, coarse ones could be metric, 73-86 GM used a long *** end for the left (some with a hole for steering stab)and a short right side end, some were standard some were metric, ahh metrican you gotta love it! I have seen 9/16 and 5/8 through 73-79 years AW150/W-100,W200's in long/short and 2- shorts with tube, a couple of ways to fix yer thing, buy 2 short rod ends and tie rod tube of that thread (or another) if tube is available or, fabricate a new tie rod tube and use what ever thread you want just make sure the taper is the same or change the taper too suit the new end's size. Hope the chevy part fixes it for ya!

The mystery has been solved. The right tie rod end has course threads and the left side has fine threads. Sometime in the past history of this Ramcharger someone had the tie rod out and installed it on opposite ends. It makes no difference as it's a straight tie rod end but it sure made it interesting when trying to find the correct threaded end. I simply bought a new fine thread tie rod end for the left side and installed it in the tie rod. I then removed the tie rod and reversed it putting the course side on the right side of the truck so no one else would have this problem in the future. Why in the world would Dodge have two different threads on the tie rod ends?
